J&L Petersen Inc. (“we”, “us”) runs jlpeterseninc.com, the website of author, speaker and executive coach Jim Petersen, PhD. This page explains what personal information we collect, why, who helps us handle it, and the choices you have.
What we collect
What you give us.
- Contact and booking forms: your name, email address and message, plus anything else you choose to tell us.
- Newsletter: your email address and name. We ask you to confirm by email before we send anything, and we record whether you open or click our emails so we can see what is useful.
- The “Which Dog Leads You?” assessment: your answers and, if you ask for your results, your email address.
- Orders: your name, email, shipping and billing address, what you bought and the amounts. Payment is handled by Stripe; we never see or store your full card number.
- Accounts: your name, email, saved addresses and a password (stored in scrambled form, never in plain text). If you turn on two-step sign-in or a passkey, we store what is needed to check it.
- Email you send us: messages sent to our contact address are stored so we can answer them.
What we collect automatically. When you visit, our servers and our service providers receive your IP address, browser and device type, the pages you view and the page that referred you. We use this to run and secure the site, block spam and understand which pages are useful.
Cookies and similar technology
- Essential: keeps your cart, keeps you signed in, and protects forms from spam and abuse. The site does not work properly without these.
- Analytics: we use Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to count visits and see how pages are used.
- Advertising: we use a Meta (Facebook) pixel and Google advertising tags to measure our marketing and to show relevant ads to people who have visited the site.
- Videos: a YouTube video loads only when you press play. Until then, nothing is sent to YouTube.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, opt out of Google Analytics with Google’s browser add-on, and manage advertising choices at Google Ad Settings and Facebook Ad Preferences.
How we use your information
- To process and deliver your order, send receipts and shipping updates, and handle returns.
- To answer your questions and requests.
- To send our newsletter, only if you have signed up. Every email includes an unsubscribe link.
- To run, secure and improve the site, and to measure our marketing.
- To meet legal, tax and accounting obligations.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information for money. We share it with the service providers that help us run the site, and only as far as they need it to do that work:
- Stripe — payments.
- Amazon Web Services — sending and receiving email, and secure storage.
- Cloudflare — delivering the site, security and bot protection.
- Our hosting provider — the servers the site runs on.
- Google — analytics, advertising, maps and YouTube.
- Meta — advertising measurement.
- Postal and shipping carriers — your name and address, to deliver your order.
Some state privacy laws treat advertising tags such as the Meta pixel as “sharing” for targeted advertising. You can opt out using the advertising links above or by contacting us. We may also disclose information when the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Order records are kept for as long as tax and accounting rules require. Newsletter details are kept until you unsubscribe. Messages and form submissions are kept for as long as they are needed to deal with your request and for a reasonable period afterwards. You can ask us to delete your information at any time (see below).
Your choices and rights
- Unsubscribe from our emails with the link at the bottom of any message.
- Ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you.
- Opt out of analytics and advertising cookies as described above.
Residents of some states, including California, have additional rights under their state’s privacy law. Contact us and we will honor them.
Security
The site uses HTTPS, passwords are stored in scrambled form, and you can add two-step sign-in or a passkey to your account. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Children
This site is for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes
If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page.
